We are planning to go up to Jerika's cabin again on March 10th - 11th.

We will meet in the South parking lot at Westminster at 1:00 PM on the 10th and carpool to the cabin like we did last time.

3-4 student volunteers for an internship (Mark)

I am looking for some help for volunteer writers/researchers. I am working on a 75 year history of our club in Sugar House and am in need of some writing help to complete this book by April 15th. I am hoping to find 3-4 student volunteers who might get credit for assistance in writing. A lot of the work would consist of transcribing and editing hand written or typed documents and doing some historical research. I estimate about 8 hours a week for 6 weeks. I have also appealed to the college of business. The completed books will be published through Blurb.com.

Individual orange count is due to Rotaract February 29th so we can send the count to Mike on March 1st.

As a club we are thinking about ordering 5 cases to split up and sell in bags of 6 oranges for $5.

Chili Open Reflection

It went a lot better than last year. Raised about $240,000 for the charities. People really liked the photo booth. The whole event was a success.

Gala Reflection

About 100 auction items for the silent auction. Really fancy 3-course dinner. Recognized Rotarians and different people involved in the charities there. Raised between $30,000-40,000. Very successful.

Crossroads Clothing Reflection

David Mays

Collecting clothes to take to the refugee homes. Luckily they'd gotten enough clothes that they didn't need them, so they loaded them up in trucks. The house the clothes were in burned down and the clothes were the only things that didn't burn. Took the clothes to Crossroads - they said on a given day they get about 80 families coming in needing clothes, so it was a great donation!

Global Peace Initiative

The next Rotary International President is promoting Peace through Service with a Global Peace Initiative. Big social media campaign. ~If you're serving people and serving with people there will be more peace. Cultural understanding through service together~ They will be creating a website and they want youth feedback - don't have the website up yet.

They sang and it was...interesting. It was fun and they were really welcoming.

**Sugarhouse Club meets every Thursday at 12:00 for lunch and we want everyone to go to at least once. Forest Dale Golf Course on 9th. Don't be late! Just show up, you don't need to contact them ahead of time, but do make sure you check the website to see if they're doing regular lunch or something different on any given week.

Why Rotaract?

All of us as members of the club have our own reasons for participating in Rotaract. Some members are former Interactors, some were roped in to provide rides, and I was lucky enough to be recruited by Jerika.

One of the best things about Rotaract right now is the incredibly high energy level we have. It's amazing that since Jan 5th we have held an opening social, sorted clothing for refugees, supported the Sugarhouse Rotary Chili Open, and planned tons of future events and projects.

This level of passion is hard to find. 

Along those lines, here is a summary of our upcoming activities.

• Feb 7^th is the deadline to turn in an application for our summer service trip to Mexico. 

• Feb 9th at 7:30 pm is our next Rotaract meeting. Come and join us at Walker 1 on the Westminster College campus.

• Career speed-dating with Rotarians is being planned for Friday, February 24^th at 6:00 pm. This event will likely take place on the Westminster College campus, and will provide opportunities to get to know successful individuals in the community. (And have loads of fun.)

• On March 23^rd (possibly the 24^th) we will be holding a dinner fundraiser and auction to help pay for our Mexico service trip. The dinner will feature Peruvian food and auctions of services and donated items. (Please keep your eyes open for a good location for this event. We are planning on between 100 and 200 attendees, and need a venue that doesn't require us to use their caterer.)

We are also planning several service projects, including a dog-walk 5k to support the Adopt Me Society in April, a large service project with the Interactors in May, and a project to benefit kids at Primary Children’s.

If you have any input on these activities feel free to comment on this post or bring your ideas to our next planning meeting.

Sugarhouse Rotary Club's Annual Chili Open

Last weekend was the Sugarhouse Rotary’s Annual Chili Open and we as a Rotaract Club decided to get involved and serve in any way we could. It was a huge success! We all ventured down to Wheeler Farm in Murray, UT for fun, friends, food, and fundraising activities like golfing and a 5k for multiple charities. Here are just a few of the causes that the Chili Open helps to support.

Many of our Rotaractors turned up for the event. There were volunteers to help in the food line inside the barn dishing up the main attraction – lots and lots of delicious chili!! Here are some of our members rockin’ health code hats for the food line. Super stylish!

We had our own table to spread the word about us and even a photo booth thanks to one of our members, Jeff Bennett. It was a blast.

The Rotarians put together an incredible event, as always. There were activities for the kids, but the Rotaractors and other 'older kids' seemed to enjoy them just as much.

And of course the 5k for the heartier participants, and golf for the rest ;)

The Westminster Rotaract Club had a blast and we can’t wait for our next activity and opportunity to serve! Thank you to the Sugarhouse Rotary Club for allowing us to participate, and to our Rotaract President-Elect Whitney Warnick for being proactive about getting us involved with this activity. Our President Jerika Michel, Vice-President Dave Mays and all the rest of us would also like to express our thanks to all the participants and everyone who made this event the huge success that it was.

Rotaract Cabin Retreat

On Friday, January 13th we all headed up to Jerika's cabin for our Rotaract Retreat. The purpose of this retreat was to get to know each other better and have fun, of course, but it was also to trap us all in a room to get some important club things taken care of! It was honestly a lot of fun.

12 of us Rotaractors were able to attend. After arriving we started off with some getting to know you games like 'I Have Never' and our own version 'I Have,' where we went around saying the fun, random things that we HAVE done in our lives. It was much more interesting and we heard some really great stories! Stories that we will hold over each other's heads for a while.....

After that we decided to go down to the lake and walk around on the ice. It seemed like a good idea, taking a chance and hoping we wouldn't fall in to our icy demise on Friday the 13th, but hey, who's superstitious?

After deciding that we were all freezing and not wanting to push our luck anymore, we came back to the cabin and warmed up some lasagna for dinner while we talked and shared more stories.



After dinner we had our long anticipated planning meeting, where we held elections and talked about our future activities. The results of our meeting are posted in the previous blog Meeting Minutes 01/13/12.

After dinner and our planning meeting we had an epic night full of Sardines and Murder in the Dark. Both games were terrifying as the cabin was out in the middle of nowhere and when the lights were off it was completely dark. We were all in a large cabin with rusty saws and antlers all over the walls. It's a miracle that the only casualty of the night was the cup that Chris broke on the counter. We also spent way longer than we should have telling ghost stories and all around just freaking ourselves out. After that we decided we needed something a little more cheerful, so we watched Little Rascals while some of our Rotaractors played BANG!

We all went to bed surprisingly early (for a bunch of college students) and went home the next morning after a delicious breakfast.

Overall we had a blast and we would all love to do it again! Thank you to everyone who made it possible, Jerika for letting us use the cabin, Whitney for bringing the food, John and Jeff for driving, and everyone else for coming and making it such a fun retreat!
